There is one day of the year that is my favorite besides Christmas day. That one day happens to be my birthday. How about you? A birthday is such a special occasion — when else do you have a chance to celebrate YOU, wonderful YOU for an entire day? This year I had a delightful day planned: attend a ladies luncheon; meet my sister afterwards for a small celebration; join my family for a celebratory dinner out. But, as all great plans go, things didn’t quite turn out the way I’d anticipated. Mother Nature threw a curve ball. Instead, I spent my special day clearing wet, heavy snow from the driveway and helping my husband breakdown ice dams. Was I disappointed? You bet I was! I felt like a spoiled girl who wasn’t getting her way and I didn’t like it one bit!
As I stood in my half shoveled driveway, resting on the snow shovel, stretching my aching back and feeling deflated, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I began to notice subtle things. The day was much milder than the freezing cold we’d been experiencing; a cardinal was in a tree singing to me; the air was refreshing; nature was enfolding me in a warm hug. Maybe this was the perfect gift, for a special day after all.
There are many times when things don’t go as planned. How do you react when it happens to you? Do you stay in a state of miserable feeling more and more annoyed? Do you hang on to your pity party like I almost did? We always have the choice to look at the bright side.
